Hospital of St. Anthony de Padua, c. 1910
At the corner of West 19th Street and Marshall Boulevard, overlooking Douglas Park, stood one of Chicago's most distinctive early hospitals. Designed in 1898 by noted Chicago architect Henry Schlacks, the Hospital of St. Anthony de Padua featured dramatic stepped gables, ornamental brickwork, and an elegant central tower that reflected the architect's celebrated work in ecclesiastical architecture.
This beautifully preserved, German-printed color postcard was published by Chicago's Franklin Post Card Company during the early twentieth century. The reverse advertises a price of just two postcards for five cents.
Part of my personal collection of vintage Chicago postcards, these little works of art offer fascinating glimpses of the city's architecture, neighborhoods, and history more than a century ago.
